The Windward School in White Plains is currently seeking city approval to repurpose the 113,000-square-foot site into a school campus. A public hearing has been scheduled by the Common Council for next month to discuss the proposal, which would require a special permit to operate a private school at the location.

According to a lohud report, if the site is approved, Windward has a contract in place to purchase the 11-acre location, which is approximately a mile west of its current school on Windward Avenue.

Last year, the March of Dimes moved out of Westchester and relocated their headquarters to Virginia. The site has been up for sale for more than two years. If approved, the new school would house approximately 350 students in grades 1 through 5 and more than 100 faculty members. Reports said that there would also be a gym added to the side of the building and an athletic field would be constructed.

If approved, the new location would take the Windward School out of a residential part of the city and into a more commercial part of White Plains, alleviating traffic concerns. The project is expected to cost between $20 million and $30 million.

Windward has operated its lower school on Windward Avenue since 1930. That location was expanded with a new gym and classrooms in 1994. They also operate a middle school in Harrison, which opened in 2002 and an Upper East Side Manhattan campus that opened three years ago.

According to the Windward School website, “the goal of (their) administration, faculty and staff is to ensure that every Windward student reads with confidence, writes with purpose, and achieves the skills necessary to lead a life of fulfillment and accomplishment.”
